Probably the most important step anyone can take in his or her recovery is to find a support group. Alcoholics and addicts invariably find themselves isolated. The most important step is to reduce that isolation. Participating in any formal or informal support group is the most effective way of reducing this isolation. Most of us can be lonely and isolated in groups too. We seem to have perfected this to an art form. So remember–It does not happen all at once. Keep coming back!!

A support group is meant to be a tool to be used in one’s recovery. But then you have to use that tool. The support group cannot do your recovery for you. That is something only you can do. A support group can of course give you a comfortable environment to try out your newly learned skills which have been nurtured by the experience strength and hope which others in the group have shared.
