Shahenshah Bar and Pub, Sector 17, and the bar at Jullunder hotel, Sector 22, were challaned for not having ‘No Smoking’ signage adhering to new COPTA provisions of October 2, 2008. The raids were conducted from 9pm to 1.30am. The raiding teams comprised officers of local health authority, food inspectors and police personnel.
The Mission disco in Sector 9 was challaned for keeping ashtrays. One person found smoking there was also fined. Another disco – Voodoo–in Sector 26, was challaned as it neither had proper signage nor a smoking area as per the provisions of COTPA. The manager of the disco directed to deal with the issues at the earliest.
Home secretary Ram Niwas said the administration planned to undertake such raids regularly to ensure that provisions of COPTA were adhered to and status of Chandigarh as a smoke–free city was maintained.
