Six months into the scam and the gang must have started believing they had found the best way to smuggle in drugs into the Capital. But for the gang which used to send ganja into Delhi from Orissa through the postal service, luck ran out on Tuesday when the Crime Branch arrested its kingpin, a conniving postman and two others for their hand in the racket.
A senior police officer said the method was used to smuggle in hundreds of kilograms of drugs.
"Nobody else in the Burari post office knew of this except the postman," he said. Over 140 kg of ganja, worth more than Rs 5 lakh, has been seized.
Shafiq Islam, the 25–year–old mastermind of the racket lives in Burari, on the outskirts of Delhi.
"He asked his suppliers in Orissa to send drugs in parcels to Delhi," said an officer. "Three to four parcels, addressed to fictitious addresses in Burari, arrived about twice a week. Each packet had about 10 to 15 kg of ganja," said Neeraj Thakur, ACP (Crime Branch).
Satpal Mann (55), a postman at the Burari post office used to hand over the parcels to Shafiq at the post office itself, said the police. Mann charged Rs 200 for each kilogram of the drug, they added. Shafiq forwarded the drugs to sellers in Burari, Jahangirpuri, Shahbad Dairy and Palwal and Faridabad.
The other two accused have been identified as Jaffar Ali (32) and Ganesh (35). Ganesh used to supply the drugs from Orissa and used to take a cut on the sale.
