Acting on a tip–off, ANC’s police inspector G V Nikan laid a trap at Baba Shaikh’s house in Mundhwa and apprehended them, said additional commissioner of police (crime) Rajender Singh.
Singh said that police constable Laxman Thorat of ANC got the tip–off that Baba Shaikh and his son were involved in supplying brown sugar in the city and one person would be arriving at their house to collect a consignment of brown sugar on Friday morning.
Accordingly, inspector Nikam and his team laid a trap near Shaikh’s house on Friday morning. And around 7.30 am, the team raided his house and nabbed the trio. “As they were conducting a search in the house, the police recovered 1.20 kg. of brown sugar, which costs about Rs 1.25 crore in the international market,” Singh said.
During interrogation, it was revealed that Shaikh, who works as a black magician, used to supply brown sugar in the city. And he has been a drug supplier since 2003. Earlier, he was based in Mumbai, where he was arrested by the Mumbai police for supplying drugs. “His another son Shahid Akhtar Shaikh alias Totra and his accomplice from Sri Lanka were also arrested in Chennai while carrying 15 kg of heroin. After these arrests, Shaikh shifted his base to Pune,” Singh said.
He said that Baig is drugs peddler from the city, who used to purchase drugs from Shaikh. He was earlier working as medical representative. The police have also searched his house in Yerwada.
Inspector Nikam said, “We are trying to find if Shaikh and associate have any international links. During the interrogation, he revealed that, he had brought brown sugar from Madhya Pradesh. He was produced in the court on Friday and remanded to police custody till February 18,” Nikam said.
