Mumbai: Shimla is set to turn smoke–free soon and the entire state of Himachal Pradesh would follow suit in three years.
“We are moving in right direction to turn Shimla smoke–free on the Chandigarh model in next few months to save passive smokers from ill effects of tobacco,” state’s Nodal Officer of Tobacco Control Programme Gopal Chauhan said.
Chauhan was speaking to IANS on the sidelines of the 14th World Conference on Tobacco or Health.
Himachal Pradesh Voluntary Health Association (HPVHA) Narender Sharma, who was also in Mumbai to attend the conference, further said that once successful the Shimla model will be replicated across the state in next two–three years.
The conference, the largest meet of anti–tobacco advocates, health experts, scientists and educators, began in Mumbai Sunday. It is the first time the event is being held in India.
More than 2,000 delegates from across the world are attending the conference at the National Centre for Performing Arts that conclude today.
