Waking up to the perils of tobacco consumption, specially among youth, a ‘Smoke-free Ahmedabad’ campaign was kicked off on Monday by health minister Jay Narayan Vyas. The campaign is supported by Bloomberg Charity, headed by Michael Bloomberg, mayor of New York city and eighth richest person in the US.
Launching the ‘healthworker guide’ on the occasion, Vyas said, “More than a hundred crore people are affected by tobacco in the world. Out of which 80 per cent are in India and the region around it. Gujarat has the highest number of people affected with 60 per cent men and 11 per cent women consuming tobacco. In the last 15 years, the incidence of cancer has increased 2.5 to 3 times”.
The campaign will focus on regions like Ahmedabad district, Ahmedabad city and Gandhinagar.
