5 Held for Selling Fake Brown Sugar
Task force police nabbed five persons including a Tollywood producer who were planning to dupe the city’s rich by trying to sell them fake ‘brown sugar’.
Acting on a tip off, West Zone team of the Task Force sent a ‘decoy’ to the house of one of the accused Y Srinivas at Model House and apprehended all the five gang members–K Venumadhav of Kukatpally, Y Srinivas of Punjagutta, Ch Krishna Sankar of Kukatpally, J Venkata Surya Kumar of Vijayawada and T Hemanth Rama Krishna–of KPHB who were trying to sell ‘Naratriptan’ drug, passing it off as contraband ‘brown sugar’ to the decoy for Rs 10 lakh.
According to police, Hemanth, who produced a flop Telugu film ‘Yuvata’ ended up in several financial troubles. To get out of it, he contacted one of his friends, Siddu, a chemist from Vishakapatnam and requested him to provide drugs for making money. To help his friend, Siddu provided Hemanth four packets of Naratriptan (weighing about 1 kilo), which has a close resemblance to brown sugar and advised him to sell it to customers in Hyderabad, where the drug is in high demand.
Hemanth then struck a deal with other accused, who are his friends, by promising to give them Rs 10 lakh as commission if they manage to sell the ‘brown sugar’ for Rs 50 lakh.
While the accused were hunting for prospective customers, police got a hint of their activities and nabbed them red-handed. The accused along with the seized property were handed over to Punjagutta police. Cases were registered against the accused under section 420 of the IPC and section 18 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.
