FIVE kilograms of heroin, pegged at Rs 25 crore in the international market, was reportedly seized by the Ludhiana police from a car on Thursday.
Ludhiana Police Commissioner Ishwar Singh said: "This is the largest seizure of narcotics by the district police. The recovery was made by ACP (Sadar) Narinderpal Singh Ruby and SHO Paramjit Singh. The two officers, along with a police party, had set up a checkpost on the Pakhowal Road near Singla Colony." The police party intercepted a white Indica and during checking, a bag was found inside the car . Drugs in five packets of 1kg each were recovered. The police have arrested the driver, Shamsher Singh, a resident of Jalamlpura Awana village.
The accused was produced in a local court and sent to police custody for three days.
ACP Narinderpal Singh Ruby said, "The number plate of the car seems to be fake and even the car may be a stolen one. We are verifying details. The accused does not have a past criminal record but has confessed to smuggling narcotics for the last three years. He has told us that the heroin came from Pakistan and that he had brought it from Amritsar. We are still to identify the people who supplied the heroin to Shamsher and whom he was going to deliver the consignment to."
