Kagdapith police station officials caught three youths carrying cannabis worth Rs 1.5 lakh from Geeta Mandir bus depot on Tuesday afternoon. Two of the arrested youths were from Orissa, said investigators.
According to Kagdapith police station officials, the police chowky at the bus depot got a message that three suspiciouslooking youths were roaming around with a heavy bag. The officials quickly approached the trio and asked them to open their luggage.
“The three were carrying 30 kg cannabis in form of leaves and roots, sold at Rs 5,000 per kg in local markets. We took them to police station for questioning. It turned out that two of them – Purno Ranjeet and Ravindra Nayak – are residents of Gajapati in Orissa, while Deepak Mithapara, 24, a resident of Vadhvan in Surendranagar, is working as a carrier,” said AR Parmar, inspector of Kagdapith police station.
He said the duo had come from Orissa to Vadodara by train where Deepak went to receive them. They then came to Ahmedabad on Tuesday afternoon to catch a bus to Dhrangadhara. “During their questioning, we got to know that Deepak was working as an agent for one Bharat Darji, a resident of Morvi and involved in drug trade. Deepak has confessed that it was his 15th trip. We have informed Surendranagar police about the incident,” said Parmar.
According to investigators, the contraband comes from illegal farms in Orissa and is mainly consumed by the labourers from other states who come to Gujarat for job. “We are yet to establish the link between the producers and end consumers,” said investigators.
