International Day Against Drug Abuse
In an initiative to control the menace of drugs and other addictions in Ahmedabad colleges, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) officials have collaborated with colleges and started an ‘Anti Drug Club’ at college levels. The move was to mark International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on Sunday.
Ahmedabad zonal unit of NCB carried out an awareness rally on Sunday morning. The rally was flagged off by Vadodara-based cricketer Irfan Pathan. Ayush Mani Tiwari, zonal director of NCB, senior NCC officials, over 500 NCC cadets and college students participated in the event, said NCB officials. The rally started and ended at NCC ground near Law Garden.
“An awareness programme for prison inmates was organized in collaboration with Sabarmati Central Jail authorities in the afternoon where artists performed a skit and dance programmes with a message of de-addiction. A team also visited drug rehabilitation facilities in the city and interacted with patients and counselors," said an NCB official.
P N Sarvaiya, superintendent of NCB, Ahmedabad, told TOI that they are targeting city and state colleges for drug-use awareness and have formed teams at college levels. “We have asked college authorities to form teams of more than five members consisting of students and members of faculty. They will arrange for awareness programmes round the year and be in touch with NCB officials and deaddiction centre authorities to identify and rehabilitate probable drug users," he said.
Several NGOs and government agencies also celebrated the day with many awareness programmes in various city parts.
