The Citizen Forum on Human Rights in association with drug de-addiction centre situated at the Department of Psychiatry, GMSH–16, organised a drug awareness camp at government dispensary in Ram Darbar Colony to observe the International Drug Abuse Day. Sushil Gupta, the President of Citizen Forum on Human Rights, Chandigarh, said 20 per cent to 40 per cent people in the country were addicted to and consumed drugs. In Chandigarh, surveys found that people were highly under drug influence. “We will be organising more camps in slums and counsel matrimonial disputes, domestic violence and human rights violations,” he said.
SK Bhalla, in–charge of drug de–addiction centre and his team members including Dr Aparna, in charge of the dispensary and members of Alcoholic Anonymous listened to the grievances of people and provided solutions. They asked people to practice yoga and meditation to develop self– confidence and strong will power. Gupta added, due to the usage of drugs there is an increase in AIDS cases in those areas where people are very poor and can’t afford treatment. In this camp, Dr Mukul Malhotra added that they have 24–hour helpline service in GMSH–16 and people can call at 0172–2768349 if they have any kind of problem regarding drug addiction.
