Concerned over the recent spurt in deaths due to illicit liquor, the Delhi High Court has directed the police to organise awareness drives and asked the lower courts to speed up the trial of such cases.
Issuing a series of guidelines for the Delhi Police, Justice V K Jain said, “Hoardings educating and cautioning the public against consumption of spurious liquor (should) be displayed at appropriate places within six weeks.”
The judge also asked the police to issue advertisements in Hindi newspapers informing people about adverse effects of spurious liquor.
The court was hearing a petition filed by the mother of a person who died after consuming spurious liquor in Raghubir Nagar, West Delhi, last year.
Appreciating the police’s efforts in organising awareness drives, such as street plays, in order to educate the public, the court said: “The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) will personally visit the areas and identify the points where special pickets need to be set up.”
