Consider alcoholism a public health issue: PIL
The Madras high court has issued notice to the Central and state governments on a public interest writ petition to consider alcoholism a public health issue and direct authorities to start de–addition and treatment centres in all government hospitals and primary health centres in Tamil Nadu.
The first bench comprising the Chief Justice HL Gokhale and Justice KK Sasidharan issued notices on the PIL filed by A Narayanan, who said the government was increasing liquor sales by fixing higher sales targets for Tasmac outlets, “overlooking the fact that the government has a responsibility to control, if not prevent, the vicious and deadly disease of alcoholism.”
The government does not have any agenda for setting up deaddiction and counselling centres in the state, he said, adding that there are only eight under–staffed de–addiction centres attached to few government hospitals.
Narayanan wanted the court to treat the increasing trends of alcoholism as a public health issue.
