Increasing alcohol consumption coupled with stressful lifestyles is arguably increasing sale of aphrodisiacs. And people are shedding inhibitions when it comes to approaching chemists to buy aphrodisiacs for their partners.
"A drink or two could make one feel amorous, but another one or two results in lowering of sexual performance," said Dr AS Mahal, while talking to TOI.
Almost all chemist shops in this district display numerous herbal aphrodisiacs that come in the form of pills, massage oils and sprays.
"The market of aphrodisiacs and in Amritsar is worth crores per month," said Ranjeesh Mehra, a wholesale medicine trader.
TOI conducted a survey of about a dozen chemist shops, which revealed almost every outlet has a good clientele demanding herbal aphrodisiacs. The sale is reported to be more at chemist shops near higher educational institutions.
Mahal said in the last three years, aphrodisiacs’ sales have increased owing to stress, strain, anxiety, fear and phobia.
"People don’t mind spending a fortune for improving their sex life," Mehra said. "The phenomenon is much more pronounced in metros and has now trickled down to smaller cities," he added.
Gynaecologist Neera Kirpal is of the view that there are no effective laws to prevent chemists from dispensing medicines which should ideally be given to customers only on the doctor’s prescription.
