Muktangan Centre Celebrates Silver Jubilee

"Nature has gifted us with a beautiful body. Do not harm it by alcoholism. Any celebration should not be one that will be regretted later."said Dr Anil Awachat, while answering to the question on addiction. In a tete–a–tete, on Sunday, Awachat– popularly known as 'Baba', revealed the 24–years' journey of 'Muktangan Rehabilitation Centre'.
At a function organised to mark the Silver Jubilee year of 'Muktangan', film directors Sumitra Bhave and Sunil Sukthankar interviewed Awachat. The programme began with screening of a short film 'Roj Nava Divas'– based on Muktangan's journey since 1986. Muktangan's tri–monthly magazine 'Anandyatri' and 'Muktangan chi goshta’, a book written by Awachat and published by Samkalin Publication were released on the occasion. Social activist Dr Abhay Bang was the chief guest for the function.
"The book is an important social document, highlighting the era from the formation of ’Muktangan’ till date, witnessed the social transformation. It was the period, when Maharashtra progressed economically. But at the same time, social issues like SEZ, suicides of farmers, malnutrition and political corruption were at the peak. This book is the story of all these questions and the solution to them," Bang asserted.
Awachat gave the credit of Muktangan’s success to the staff members, most of them are rehabilitated addicts. He shared the experiences of how ’Muktangan’ modified the traditional treatment according to patients and how the ’punishment’ is replaced by ’creative activities’.
Project Director of Muktangan De–addiction Centre Mukta Puntambekar, Dr Anand Nadkarni, S D Dumbare were present on the occasion.
