My name is Neeraj and I am multi addict From year 2000 to july 2004, I was a regular user of Charas, Ganja, Bhang, and Alcohol.
My addiction started when I was in 8th std. I smoked a cigarette, I liked its taste and became habituated. Then in the 10th std. I tasted beer with some school friends. We bunked school everyday for smoking and the result was that I failed in my examinations and the school management asked my mother to withdraw my admission due to my very bad records. Thus I took admission in another school. I succeeded to create a good image in front of my teachers. My smoking was on and on the other hand I made friends in my colony who turned out alcoholics…
My father who was a social drinker, became a round the clock drinker. A huge problem started in my house. However I couldn’t face the problem and ran away. I used to avoid coming home. But whenever I went home, my father started beating me.
Once my father went in black out and a friend of mine brought him Home. His name was Manoj. He was also our neighbour. He became a very good friend of me. I started sharing my problems with him. In this period my addiction grew with him. I did successful business in Diwali, I organized a bhang & alcohol party for friends in my flat. On that day I went in Black out condition for the first time. After that I became an addict of Bhang and alcohol. In fact I had a group of 20-25 friends. Who all were addicts. I started giving money to lower class people on an interest of 10%. In this business Manoj was with me.
On 12th March 2001, when my 12th std. Examinations were on, my grand ma whom I loved very much, expired as a result. I failed , actually I was high because of my addiction but everyone in the house sympathized with me saying it happened due to granny’s demise. Then on 5th April 2004,due to over dose of alcohol & cardiac arrest I lost my father. Now there was no one to stop me. I was doing my own business of property and finance.
A friend of mine opened a pool snooker club , and invited me to learn the game. I learned it and started to play on bet’s At the same club. Soon i became no.1 player & made a lot of friends . One day when I was at the club, Manoj came there. & lighted a cigarette and gave it to me. When I took 3 or 4 puffs I got a kick. I asked him whether it was a Charaswali cigarette. I enjoyed it. Very shortly I discovered the place from where Manoj used to buy at the club I offered it to my friends & the owner himself they enjoyed it. Many of them became addict’s of bhang and Charas just because of me.
After one year when my addiction was on high, I lost my business because of Manoj . So I started borrowing money ,after collecting sufficient sum, ran away from home along with a very good friend of mine. We went to Mumbai and blew up the entire amount in substance abuse. Then I came back home, by now I had turned into a multi-addict. To fulfil my needs I sold of my mom’s jewellery & valuable item’s,simultaneously the list of people whom i owed money kept increasing.Despite lack of resources my mother managed to pay of some.By now it was obvious to her that I am on a totally different track.
One night when I came home, my mother caught me red handed with a chillim and Bhang, Next day morning she took me to a family doctor for blood test as I was not accepting that I used it. I got caught in the test. My family doctor told my mother about Muktangan De-addiction center Pune.
During this period I realized that I couldn’t pay back the loans taken, under any circumstances, I told my mother about it. I decided to run away from Indore and take admission in Muktangan. On 1st July 2004. I came to Muktangan and completed the 35 days treatment. In those 35 days I really understood the meaning of good persons and also good friends. I felt that I want to be like other normal persons. In Muktangan I attented A.A. and N.A. meetings. There I got to listen to lot of sharings by the staff members, I realized it that I can earn my reputation back and change back to the Sober Neeraj. But it was not so easy. I started coming every month for follow up’s, on the last Saturday’s of every month for Birthday celebration. I always keep contact with my Counsellor and Muktangan to avoid any tension or obsessions.
So just because of A.A. and regular follow up’s, today I am away from my addiction and will continue doing so. Just One day at a time.
